Can the West pull back from the brink before it's too late?
That is the question at the heart of The Brink, a brand new podcast presented by Telegraph columnist and foreign correspondent Jake Wallis Simons and former Parachute Regiment officer and Sandhurst lecturer, researcher and analyst Andrew Fox, both of whom have seen life on the brink first-hand.
As a journalist, Jake has reported from all over the world. He covered all the Islamic State terror attacks across Europe, from the Bataclan to Berlin, Stockholm, Nice and Brussels, as well as the atrocities in Istanbul and the Sri Lanka Easter bombings. He was also on the ground for Mugabe’s fall from power in Zimbabwe, the rise of Boko Haram in northern Nigeria, the collapse of Venezuela and unrest in the Middle East, among many other stories (including the Brexit vote from Brussels).
His new book, Never Again? How the West Betrayed the Jews and Itself argues that the global epidemic of antisemitism is a symptom of how our culture has drifted away from the values that made it great.
While the Jews will survive this disturbing chapter, as they have done for thousands of years, the future of the West is more of a worry. Averting disaster will mean clawing society back from the three tribes of the new radicalism – progressive fanatics, Islamist extremists and nationalist chauvinists – and finding our way back to sanity.
Andrew’s popular Substack focuses on the geopolitics of Israel and the Arab world, drawing upon his experience of three tours in Afghanistan (including one attached to the US Army Special Forces), as well as additional tours in Bosnia, the Middle East, and Northern Ireland. He holds degrees in Law and Politics, Modern War Studies and Psychology, and specialises in disinformation research, military affairs, and the Middle East.
As a Research Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, Andrew has released a series of high-profile studies into Hamas’s human shield strategy, manipulation of casualty figures and the Western media, information warfare, and has spent time on the ground in Gaza and Lebanon.
With a collection of stellar guests, Andrew and Jake will explore how our culture can restore its old spirit and restore our sense of self-confidence, both at home and overseas.
Joining them will be a range of voices including Douglas Murray, Yoav Gallant, Bari Weiss, Tom Holland, Allison Pearson, Sir Niall Ferguson, Giles Coren, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Matti Friedman, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Tom Tugendhat, Ed Husain, Graham Linehan, Julia Hartley-Brewer and many more.
